Brief history of Santa Marta Historical sights

       Santa Marta has a rich history that, like most american regions, starts with a native culture that we know little to none about that was conquered by a european country. In this case the natives were called the Tairona and although they mainly worked in agriculture, there's also evidence that they processed and sold salt.  The now known city of Santa Marta was conquered on July 29, 1525 by Spanish conquistador Rodrigo de Bastidas. This city is the oldest remaining city in Colombia and the second oldest in south america. Santa Marta gained its independence along with all of Colombia on July 20, 1810. Well most of the regions didn’t begin to declare independence until 1811.
